FAQ

Who should attend La Leche League meetings?

Women interested in breastfeeding are welcome to attend LLL meetings. Women are encouraged to begin attending meetings as soon as they know they are pregnant or before, if they are interested! Attending early in a pregnancy gives mothers plenty of time to learn as much as possible about the “womanly art of breastfeeding”.  Women struggling in their nursing relationship are encouraged to come find help and support.  Women sucessfully nursing are welcome to come find camaraderie and share their wisdom.  Wherever you are in your journey, this is the place for you.  Also, your babies, toddlers, and children are always welcome (and in the case of nurslings, encouraged) to join you!

Why should I attend La Leche meetings?

LLL meetings are ideal for learning from and making friends with other mothers. These meetings provide time for mother-to-mother sharing in a friendly and accepting atmosphere. In generations past, many mothers had plenty of support for breastfeeding their babies because their mothers, grandmothers and sisters had breastfed. Now many of us live far away from our families and most likely, they didn’t breastfed. Breastfeeding is natural, but it is a learned art. Attending a LLL meeting and seeing other mothers breastfeed their babies helps new and expectant mothers learn how to nurture their babies too.

What happens at La Leche meetings?

At group meetings La Leche League Leaders and other mothers share experiences, give suggestions and offer support and encouragement. LLL meetings are ideal for learning from and making friends with other mothers. These meetings provide time for mother-to-mother sharing in a friendly and accepting atmosphere. The informal meetings are attended by expectant, new and experienced mothers and their babies. Most Groups rotate through a series of breastfeeding topics; however, every meeting is different and the questions of the attendees, particularly those who are pregnant or have new babies, are always given top priority.

Who leads La Leche meetings?

All meetings are led by one or more La Leche League Leaders.  LLL Leaders are mothers who have breastfed their own babies and been trained and accredited by La Leche League International to offer information and support to other breastfeeding mothers.  Some of us have newborns and toddlers ourselves, while others have been helping mothers breastfeed for many years. Since we’re volunteers, we weave our LLL work into the rhythm of our family, home, school, or professional lives.  We’re available to answer your breastfeeding questions via phone, email, or support group meetings.

Do I need to have attended a meeting/met a leader in person in order to receive assistance?

By no means! While it is true that we recommend meeting attendance for support and edification, it is by no means a pre-requisite for receiving assistance.  If you are in need of help or information, please do not hesitate to call.  That is what we are here for.
